The European Data Protection Board (EDPB) makes protecting children’s data child’s play.

With the everyday use of digital tools, children are more vulnerable than adults because they do not easily recognize dangers. The applications they use often collect their data without them even being aware of it. They are exposed to these risks throughout their entire lives, and digital traces are often impossible to erase.

The European Data Protection Authority (DPA) within the European Data Protection Board (EDPB) has chosen the protection of children’s (digital) data and children’s privacy on the internet as its strategic priority.

In February 2025, the EDPB adopted the Statement on age assurance, which helps organizations verify users’ age in compliance with the GDPR. Age verification is essential to ensure that children do not access content that is not appropriate for their age. At the same time, the age verification method must be as non-intrusive as possible, and children’s personal data must be protected.

According to the EDPB Strategy 2024-2027, the Board is currently developing Guidelines on the processing of children’s data, thereby further strengthening the protection of children’s data.

The EDPB is taking a step further with a new campaign by communicating directly with children about online privacy. Using simple concepts and interactive materials, the EDPB helps children understand their digital rights and the importance of safeguarding personal data. A dedicated hub called “Privacy for Kids” (or “Privacy for Children”) will soon be launched, where parents, teachers, and educators can find everything they need to help children understand and protect their digital privacy. The content will be available in various languages.

January 28 has been declared Data Protection Day and reminds us how important it is to particularly protect children’s personal data in the digital world. Together, we are building a safer online environment where children can learn, play, and grow aware of the importance of their privacy.
